The Vikings may have QB Brett Favre back, and WR Percy Harvin appears to be OK after last week's scary episode.

But things aren't nearly as positive for WR Sidney Rice.

(Minneapolis) Star Tribune beat reporter Chip Scoggins tweeted that Rice's troublesome hip injury required surgery, though apparently it "went well." The Tribune suggested late last night that such a procedure would likely KO Rice for half the 2010 season.

After two disappointing seasons, the former second-rounder erupted in Year 3 with the help of Favre, snaring 83 passes for 1,312 yards and eight TDs.

Rice's absence would mean a larger role for Bernard Berrian (who struggled to mesh with Favre in 2009), a likely starting job for Harvin and offers an explanation for the team's flirtation with Javon Walker, Favre's former teammate in Green Bay and a man whose 6-3, 215-pound build is similar to Rice's

Considering Rice was hurt in the NFC Championship Game, the timing of his operation is puzzling. Favre had is left ankle addressed three months ago after taking a beating in the same game.
