The NFL is acknowledging that a third-quarter hit on Vikings quarterback Brett Favre should have been called a penalty, which would have nullified a New Orleans Saints interception on the key play in the NFC championship game.
"It's the type of hit that we don't want," NFL vice president of officiating Mike Pereira said, "... because clearly we're trying to protect the knees and we need to focus on this to make sure we don't miss [them]."
The score was tied at 21 at the time, and the Vikings would have kept the ball and been inside the Saints' 20-yard line had the penalty on the Saints' Bobby McCray been called.
