No one knows when Brett Favre will make up his mind about playing next season. (Don't hold your breath, Jets fans.)

But if Favre's return comes down to a vote inside the Jets' locker room, it sounds like his status for 2009 would be a no-brainer - Gang Green wants him back.

There is one catch, though: Some of Favre's teammates say they'd prefer their quarterback to report to training camp before mid-August this time around.

"I would love to see him back next year," receiver Jerricho Cotchery said after the Jets' 24-17 home loss to the Dolphins Sunday. "You don't learn the ins and outs of this offense in a couple of months so I would love to see him come back and get the chance to learn the (offense) ... and get an offseason of (preparation) in so we can turn some things around."

Cotchery called the Jets' play in the final five weeks of 2008 "very inconsistent," and Favre's performance could certainly fall in that category. Actually, that's being kind. The old gunslinger seemed to run out of gas at the end of the season, finishing with two touchdown passes and nine interceptions in the Jets' last five games. It's no shocker that the Jets went 1-4 in that stretch, falling short of the postseason after starting the season 8-3.

Last year, Favre decided to retire in March, only to change his mind over the summer and try to return to the Packers. Green Bay management made it clear the team wasn't interested and worked out a deal to send Favre to the Jets in early August. If the 39-year-old future Hall of Famer decides to give it another go with Gang Green and return for his 19th season, safety Kerry Rhodes would like to see him on the practice field before Aug. 9.

"If he wants to come back and if he can put in his time for the whole year, then that's fine, that's fine with me," Rhodes said of Favre, who typically eschewed off-season minicamps with the Packers. "If he's not going to be committed to it and not want to be here the whole time then it's going to be tough for everybody.

"He couldn't control what happened this year, but I'm just saying in general, if he's going to come back, don't string it out."
