Green Bay -- If Brett Favre shows up in a Packers uniform for the first training camp practice Monday, he knows that Aaron Rodgers is still the starter.

It's unclear whether general manager Ted Thompson or coach Mike McCarthy told Favre personally that nothing had changed with the quarterback situation, but according to an NFL source with knowledge of the situation, Favre is aware of the Packers' thinking.

Agent James (Bus) Cook had been telling the Packers all week that Favre planned to return, so when Favre called Thompson on Wednesday and informed him of his decision, the Packers were prepared for it. Favre and Cook have been told that "things are different now" in Green Bay and that the Packers weren't shifting gears to accommodate him.

There are indications that Favre still wants to play for the Packers and will accept whatever role he's given when training camp opens. He's confident that he'll be able to outperform Rodgers and force them to play him.

But it's also possible that Cook is spreading the word that Favre wants to play for the Packers to scare the club into thinking that it's going to have to deal with him in training camp and all the things that go with it. Even before Favre made his intentions known, around 50 national media members were expected at the first day of camp. You can triple that if Favre shows up.

Favre and Cook may think that's the best way to get the Packers to release or trade Favre. Certainly, the ball is rolling on trade talks because the Packers don't want the scenario in which training camp becomes a circus. But they are telling people they are prepared to take Favre back if that's what it comes down to. Whether that's the case, is something only time will tell.
